Living Local: The Total Immersion Experience
Are you ready to take that all-important step towards a new life but still hesitating?
Are there questions, not clearly formulated, still tugging on the back of your
mind, about such a move?
Do you want to have an “authentic” experience without the pressure of making
a purchasing decision that may be premature?
Do you want to know what it’s “really’ like to live in Panama on a local, rather than
a tourists’budget?
Before I decided to explore Panama as a location for part-time retirement living,
I spent a lot of time on the computer researching other options in Latin America.
One piece of advice I often ran into was to plan to spend six months in the country
under consideration; preferably at the worst time of the year. The rainy season in
Panama is a good to time to have a “worst case” reality check before making that life-
changing decision. In truth, I discovered that the rainy season in The Azuero, is
comparable to the month of April in the northeastern part of United States.
I followed that advice when I traveled alone to Panama in the winter of 2005. So many
Unknowns assailed me as I prepared to leave! So many questions from friends and
Family. Questions about my sanity in undertaking the trip as a single woman,
concerns for my safety; for my ability to find a place to live. Would my beginner-level
language skills be enough? And on and on! Through it all I knew that I had to go and
that I would be “ok” and that I would never forgive myself if I failed to take this chance.
As it turned out, the experience was invaluable, so much more than I could have
anticipated sitting in front my computer back in Boston, and so I decided that I could,
through my experiences, help others to make the journey.

The Offer
You’ve read that it is possible to live in Panama on five hundred dollars a month.
In fact, the Panamanian Government only requires an individual to have a verifiable
monthly income of five hundred dollars in order to qualify for residency. You’ve also
read that it is possible to employ a full-time, live-in housekeeper at $150-$200 per
month. Well, it’s true, but because I believe that first-hand knowledge is often the
most valuable, and, no, I’m not from the “show me” state, I want you to see for
yourself. I want you to discover, on your own terms, in your own way, the many
charms and affordable lifestyle of Panama.
For a minimum stay of three (3) months you will live in a fully furnished, two-bedroom,
one bath house in one of the small, brand new subdivisions in and around Chitre on
the Azuero Peninsula. You will get to know your neighbors, primarily Panamanians
raising their families, your community, and your new country. You will be totally
immersed in the culture, language and customs of the country. From your home
base, your opportunities for far-ranging explorations are innumerable since The
Azuero is almost dead center of the isthmus. Public transportation is low-cost ($5.50
one way to Panama City; a 3½ hour trip) and destinations throughout the country are
no more than a days’ travel.
You will receive personal Spanish instruction for an hour per day, three times per
week. Utilities, exclusive of long-distance telephone and cable television, are
included. The gardener and housekeeper will help keep the property neat, and our
support team will be on hand to help make your experience a very special adventure.
The all-inclusive price of $750.00 per month allows two people to stay well below their
monthly allocation of $500.00 per person and able to afford the little “extras”.
So pack your suitcases, grab your camera and toothbrush, and hurry on down.
Your adventure begins now!
